The Viking ceremony

The ceremony  is going to be held at Mirador playa Granada on friday the 19th at 19:00 hours.

The ceremony is going to be realy spesial as it is a Handfasting wedding or as the name is in Icelandic HJÓNA BAND. In the list bellow is how the ceremony is from the start to the end, as it will be held in Icelandic so better to know what it is all about be for you attend. It is also realy inportant for Adrian and Rakel to get the guests involve in the ceremony  so please read bellow.

HandFasting or Hjóna Band 

Handfasting or hjónaband is an ancient Celtic/Medieval custom and also in Ásatrú from the Vikings- in which two people came together to declare of their own free will that they intended to be together and it is made with a rope by there hands and calling on the viking gods.

How it is

When the guests are coming in and before geting to their seats they have to stop  to make a KNOT on the couples  Handfasting rope. That symbolizes the strainght of the couples marrige as they do have their friends and family support.  It is realy important to send good energy ,love and blessing while the guest ties the knot.  Afer that they are welcome to sit down for the ceremony.

The altar in the ceremony is specially prepared table containing the following items:

  •  Photographs of the couple beloved deceased, as an invitation for them to witnes and participate in the wedding.

  • Custom viking drinking horns  

  • Handfasting rope 

  • Statue of FRIGG, the godess, (queen of ÁSGAR and the highest of the godess), married to ODIN the lider of the gods. She is associate with love, marriage and the fertility of the land.

  • 4 statues of the choosen gods ,Freyja,Óðinn,Skaði and Týr.

​Ceremony starts with the spokeman of the gods to enter tothe groom to  the altar, then comes the bride to be. The spokeman  welcome everyone and make sure they knew the sequence of events, the symbolism behind each action, and to give a little “word of dedication” about the concept of what marriage is.

Adrian and Rakel have to join hands with there right hand, the Handfasting rope will be placed on ther joint hands and  the calling of the gods start. That is done in Ásatrú to bless the couple and each god  have something special to represent in the marrige. 

While calling for each of the gods there is a help neaded from the guest -Together we all call once to each of them  for the blessing, then we will hear the spokeman from that god while the rope is tied in one circle around their hands.

The choosen gods:

  • Freya: Is versatil god associate with love, beauty and war. She is a key figure in the pantheon. She is often called the lord of the slain, (the god of the dead), because she shares half of the fallen warriors with ODIN in his afterlife kingdom. She will give them strength for beauty, love and courage.

  • Odin: He is one of the principal gods. Often seen as the chief deity. Heis revered as the god of the wisdom knowlegde, war, poetry and magic. Known for his relanteless pusuit of wisdom and understanding of the world. He will give the couple strength for wisdom, knowledge, and wider view on life.

  • Skadi: Was a fearce and independent giantess so she eated with winter, mountains, skiing and haunting. She was known for her strength, determination and conection to wilderness. She will give to the couple strength for adventure, mental and physical strength, and to live a free life..

  • Tyr: He is asocciate with courage, law and justice. He is depicted as a brave and honorable figure, known for his self-sacrifice and sense of duty. Tyr embodies war, oaths, fairness and righteousness. He will the couple justice and fairness to each other, - they will respect  and be brave for each other - in peace and war.

After each good been called the spokeman asks the guests if some one likes to  give the couple a beautifull words and good energy  to take with them in to the marriage. It can be  just one word like " good people" " loving friends" " happy life"  but better to find what comes  from the heart at that moment. It is also ok to talk about their good qualities and the couple's suitability, but this is no the time for a long speach.

After doing the following for each god and wraping the rope around their hands it is time for the Viking vows, wich Rakel will express in english and Adrián in spanish. Then last but not least  to "tie the knot " and pull on the rope with the guests cheering for the good luck and drinking from the horns   as symbolizes strength, vitality, and abundance in Nordic cultures. In the context of a wedding, it takes on the additional meaning of unity and shared prosperity.  

Then it is time to start the feast and fun.
